Samsung's Transparent OLED Laptop

Plastic Electronics reports that Samsung Electronics
will release products using its clear active matrix OLED
 displays within the next 12 months. Samsung displayed
prototypes using the clear AMOLEDs during CES 2010 back
in January. However this is the first indication that the
models on display will actually head to retail any time
soon.

As we saw during the show, the laptop sporting Samsung's
clear AMOLED allowed the user to see objects placed behind
the screen while still offering sharp, bright images on
the display. While the actual technology was quite
impressive, the ability to see movement through the
AMOLED screen looked to be somewhat distracting.

Plastic Electronics said that the first device to go
commercial using the tech will be Samsung's IceTouch MP3
player (YP-H1). This device is a portable all-in-one that
plays music, DVDs, tunes in FM radio stations, and more.
The estimated price will be around $328 USD when it finally
hits the market.

 
















While the utility of a see-through laptop probably
isn't that high for the average user, several medical
and industrial industries could greatly augment design
work or frame 3-D models over real life in real-time.

Congratulations guys, your iPhones
are no longer merely a smartphone
from now on, as they can turn into
robot dogs too… with the assistance
of this new accessory launched by
Japan-based company BANDAI.
Though it’s bit of hard to imagine,
the robot dog can actually do many
things as a real dog does, including
running, jumping, playing games and
so on

Bandai has introduced Smartpet,
a robotic dog that uses your iPhone as
its face and control center, reports The
Verge.

Controlled via a free app,
Smart-pet will react to your touchscreen
gestures with over 100 facial expressions,
and you can make it do tricks by voice commands or movements in front of the Facetime camera. As the pet gets more emotionally attached to you it’ll learn more reactions, and it can also sing and dance with other dogs via Bluetooth. It’s not all fun and games, though, as Smartpet also functions as an alarm clock and hands-free phone.

The Smartpet will reportedly be released
in Japan on April 24th for around ¥6,500 ($78)
in black and white

 The free Smartpet app essentially gives
the robotic pet a heartbeat, bringing it
to life through your smartphone. Smartpet
reacts to touchscreen gestures as if being
stroked like a real pooch capable of
performing tricks by listening to voice

commands and movements in front of the
camera

In virtual pet fashion,
the Smartpet will learn more reactions,
and gradually becomes more respondent
through trust with its owner.

And like some real dogs,
Smartpet will wake you up.
Only this time with an alarm
clock and handsfree phone rather than dribbling at your feet. Bandai’s Smartpet will be launching on 24th April in Japan for around £49.

A UK release has yet to be made,
but Bandai is hoping for a successful
first year, so who knows, we may yet
see the Smartpet roll out across the globe.

The next generation of capsule camera is already here: a little cam developed by scientists from the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, which can work by receiving magnetic instructions from the MRI that steers a rudder like motor. As the device is wirelessly guided, it will then eliminate the need for an invasive tether guidance system and also reduce the discomfort of patients. It hasn’t been tested yet in the human body, but it has been tested in water, so we believe the human trials shouldn’t be far behind, and the day to use it will come soon.

In Japan, there are several gadgets that can move to music
from Apple's iPod and a product called Miuro,
similar to the Rolly, also dances and wheels to
tunes from the iPod.

The Rolly can play MP3 and ATRAC
files but the device has no display,
though according to Associated Press,
the Rolly can be set as an alarm clock. According to reports, the Rolly can store more
than 600 songs but the capacity will go down if complex moves
are added to the Rolly.

Computer Assisted Memory

Computer assisted memory is a recent goal, in that the very idea itself didn't crop up until we started pretty much practicing it anyway. We started uploading family photos to Flicker and burning our home movies to DVD and now that we've pretty much started doing it already, we want to go farther. From the still far-off goal of silicon enhanced artificial neurons, to the shaky present-day experiments already underway that simply photograph your days and archive them in search-able databases - computer assisted memory, in one shape or another, is going to happen. 

How This Will Change The World:

What if you could remember everything? No foreign language would ever get rusty, no keys would ever be lost, no anniversary would ever be forgotten and hastily covered for by purchasing last minute gifts at the gas station. That could all happen with the complete archival of actual memories on an external system. Just imagine it: Terra-bytes of storage, and nothing ever forgotten. Wisdom, after all, is little more than the possession of a larger database of memories from which to draw, so picture a world where simply purchasing a new hard drive puts you on par with the Dalia Llama. With an archival memory system, even death wouldn't be the end; your every thought and memory could be accessed by anybody, anywhere, forever. You could have Einstein on a thumb drive to browse through when bored. No genius, artist or visionary would ever be truly lost again.

With an artificial memory system, one unlucky day turns you into the guy from Memento, and since we lost the hard drive that remembers pop culture references for us, we're pretty sure that guy turned out just fine--so everything's cool, homey!

 

iPhone 5 Concept

One of the best ways to know your platform has made it is when you see users start injecting their own creativity into it. Obviously, the most common indicator is when lots of programmers start developing apps and add-ons. But, the other big thing to watch is feedback from users on how they see the future trajectory of the product.

When it comes to the iPhone 5, there are a number of potential leaks that add to the excitement and anticipation of waiting for Apple to share their vision for the next iPhone.

While we have a rough idea of what to expect, including a slimmer body and better camera, we still have to wait for Apple to show off the goods.

Until then, I invite you to drool over the features that San Francisco design shop Aatma envisions on a future iPhone. For the record, I doubt we will see a laser keyboard or holographic display on the next iPhone, but if Apple were able to deliver such a feature packed device, it would be enough to make me say goodbye to Android.

The killer feature for me is the laser keyboard. If Apple were able to put such a feature in the iPhone 5, we wouldn’t need bluetooth iPhone keyboards, and could jump into productivity mode anywhere there was a flat surface. You have to admit the swipe out gesture to turn the laser keyboard on is pretty sweet.

While a holographic display would be amazing, I’d prefer a built-in projector that can display an HD video on whatever wall is closest. You can already purchase pico projectors that do this, and Apple has filed patents showing that the company is investigating integrated projectors. We saw pico projectors in smartphones at CES 2010, so it is possible, but not in such a slim package — yet.

If you could pick one way out there feature to add to the next iPhone, what would it be?

Touch computing dominate

New input methods will be the dominant trend of 2012. Tablet computers such as the iPad might seem like a nice alternative to desktop and laptop computers, but I believe they're more than that: They're replacements. Just as the command line (remember that?) gave way to graphical user interfaces, so the mouse will be superseded by touchscreens.

The signs are obvious: Windows 8 and Mac OS X Lion, the latest desktop operating systems, borrow heavy from their mobile counterparts. These new interfaces essentially impose a touchscreen-inspired interface over the traditional desktop environment.

Over time, this half-step will become a whole one, and mobile operating systems will dominate. The transition won't be complete by the end of 2012, but we'll be much further down the path, and using computer mice much less often.
